PRIZE FUND:

Open section prizes are guaranteed. Other projected section prizes are based on 40 paid entries per section.

Open Section: $2,000-1,000-500-250; U2350: $750-350-200
Under 2200 Section: $1,000-500-250-125; U2050: $450-225
Under 1900 Section: $1,000-500-250-125; U1750: $450-225
Under 1600 Section: $800-450-250-125; U1450: $400-200
Under 1300 Section: $700-350-200-125; U1150: $250-125; U1000: $200-100

NOTE: Unrated Players: Maximum prize for unrated players is $150 in both the U1600 and U1300 sections.


SPECIAL PRIZES:

Selection of winners and allocation of these subjectively determined special prizes is at the sole discretion of the tournament organizer.

Best Fighting Spirit / & Best Played Game: $200-100 and taken from any round. Selected games must be annotated by winner.
Brilliancy: $100-50 and taken from any round. Submit position, game score, and annotate several moves leading up to the brilliancy.
Best Opening Innovation: $100-50 and taken from any round. Authors must demonstrate the value of their opening innovation vs. current best practice.
Winners will have games, brilliancies, and opening innovations submitted to Chess Life for publication.
Upset Prizes in U1600 & U1300 Sections: $25 book credit prize per round. Maximum 2 prizes per player. Only for games in rounds 1-6 of the 4-day schedule.

Tournament Book: After the tournament, all registered players in the Eastern Open will receive a tournament book by email. The book will consist of the article submitted to Chess Life, annotated games submitted for the special prizes, annotated games submitted by other players, tactical puzzles, and games with opening innovations. In addition, all games submitted from the Open section, and selected games submitted from other sections will be published in The Week in Chess download and the Tournament Book.




ENTRY FEES / RATINGS:

Online Early Entry Fees: Open=$135; U2200=$125; U1900=$120; U1600=$110; U1300=$100; U1000/Unrated=$75.
This early rate will be available until Midnight Friday, December 20th. Thereafter, you can still register online until Midnight Thursday December 26th but for $25 more (this is the regular on-site or walk-up registration rate).

On-Site Walk-up Registration: $25 more than the Online Early Registration rates (see above). See Schedule below for on-site registration times.
Re-entry: $75 for any non-Open section and limited to rounds 1-4. December 2019 rating list is used. $10 service charge for refunds.

GMs, IMs, FMs:
GMs: Free entry and $135 deducted from any prize.
IMs: $65 advance entry and $70 deducted.
FMs: $90 advance entry and $45 deducted.
Only 4-day schedule. No Open section re-entries allowed.

OPEN SECTION - SPECIAL FIDE RULES: FIDE Rules will be used, with regular US Chess 1-hour lateness/default rule in effect. If a player has no US Chess rating, then we use your FIDE rating +100 points. If a player has no US or FIDE rating, then we assign a rating for other countries per the US Chess rulebook. Foreign players with no FIDE membership MUST pre-register by December 15th so that country can register the player with FIDE. There is only a 4-day schedule and no re-entries allowed for the Open section.




SCHEDULES:

4-day Schedule:
7 Rounds Over 4 Days (12/27-30) For All Sections.
On-Site Registration: Fri: 4-5:30pm.
Time Control: 40/120, SD/30, d10.
Schedule: Round 1: Fri 12/27 at 6pm; Rounds 2-3, 4-5: Sat & Sun 12/28-29 at 11am & 5:30pm; Rounds 6-7: Mon 12/30 at 10am & 4:30pm.

3-day Schedule:
7 Rounds Over 3 Days (12/28-30) For All Sections EXCEPT the Open Section.
On-Site Registration: Sat 12/28: Until 4:45pm.
Time Control: Rds 1-3: G/45, d10.
Schedule: Rounds 1-3: Sat 12/28 at 5pm, 7pm, 9pm. Then join 4-day 12/29 in Round 4.


OTHER DETAILS:

Byes: ½-pt byes available for any round, but for Rounds 5-7, players must commit before Round 4. Limit of 2 byes if in contention for prizes.

Equipment: Please bring sets, clocks, and boards as none will be provided.

Refund Policy: There is a $10 service charge for refunds. To obtain an entry fee refund you MUST notify the tournament TD in person or by email MORE THAN two hours BEFORE the start of Round 1. No refund, full or partial, is ever given once you have started playing your game in the first round. To contact the TD, use: Contact TD Karl.
